Creepy #2 - Warren

You know, there aren't enough early Creepys on here, so let's fix that right now!

Behind the grabber of a cover by Frank Frazetta(what would you do in this situation?) is a superb collection of writers and artists--they were off and running at the very outset.

After an Uncle Creepy frontspiece by George Evans, we have "Fun & Games!" by Archie Goodwin and Joe Orlando, about a guy driven to murder by his shrewish, harridan of a wife. Be careful what you wish for!

In "Creepy's Loathsome Lore" we get a little history lesson about vampires courtesy Goodwin and Bob Lubbers, then next up is "Spawn of the Cat People" by Goodwin and Reed Crandall, which is a classic tale of mis-direction.

"Wardrobe of Monsters", by Otto Binder and Gray Morrow, is about a guy who finds himself with the ability to take control of the bodies of monsters and then get a couple of troublesome people out of the way. No way can that plan go wrong!

"Creepy's Loathsome Lore" is back, this time about werewolves, by Goodwin and Frank Frazetta, and is a marvel of storytelling in just five panels. Next is "Welcome Stranger" by Goodwin and Al Williamson, about two guys who come across some weird goings-on in a small town, and don't live to tell about it.

Next is anotther installment of "I Robot" by Binder and Orlando which, I have to admit, never did much for me--the tone seemed too goofy for the EC-esque tone Warren captured so effortlessly in these early issues. But I'm starting to come around, appreciating the lightning speed at which the story moves from chapter to chapter. And the whole trapped-in-a-world-he-never-made thing is always good fodder for a tragic story.

"Ogre's Castle" is by Goodwin and Angelo Torres, and features a knight a little too convinced of his task to slay a hideous ogre and save the damsel in distress. Look before you hack, buddy!
